Local Pet Store Stories

I started this as a short comment, but it became an essay so take a look… I use to work at a local pet store about four years ago. Being a college freshman, I worked over the summer and was looking for full-time hours. They would schedule me purposely 30-35 hours so I never get full time. Also, the store manager said that she was scheduling people based on the number of animals we sold. Puppies sold for $800-$4000 and you get a 1%-tax free commission as if you were a car salesperson. To get more hours you needed to sell multiple puppies a week so you can sell more puppies. I use to work at a local pet store about four years ago.

I always got paired up with managers that would always hoard over the puppy areas, by assigning us to other areas of the store to clean all day, in order to have the sole opportunity to sell puppies. So I would never be able to sell enough to get 35 hours.

I hated that job, and all shifts were around 6 hours with the potential for a 1/2 hour unpaid break if the manager was able to schedule enough people on a shift. If there was only 2-3 staff, we wouldn't get a break.

To top it off, I got stuck on training pay for 3 months, so I was making $7.75 instead of $8.25. This was due to constantly being put on shifts with 1 manager and me. Eventually, I was training new employees ON TRAINING PAY! And one of the people I trained came off training pay before I did.

I ended up working for them that winter then ghosting them and finding a new job because I was done with all these b.s. hoops to jump through.
