My boss said I exceeded his expectations but didn’t write “exceeded expectations” on my performance review because its “too early”. I have been working for 8 months.

I asked for clarification and apparently getting “exceeded expectations” is very rare and practically no one gets it. Why would employees want to go above and beyond their role if there is no recognition for it? Anyone else have bs stories about their performance reviews?
