I started at this job in November 2020 making $10 an hour. Got promoted to a key-holder three months in & had to fight for a dollar raise to $11/hr. Two months later they raised the starting wage to $11/hr because they couldn’t keep employees. I then had to fight for them to give me another dollar raise to $12/hr. Two months after, I finally got my raise to $12/hr which is where I still am currently.
Recently, they ‘promoted’ me and had me start opening the store, counting money, balancing out the store, and going to the bank to make deposits, yet they have REFUSED to give me the raise for doing this extra work, with the boss stating that “Rick (the COO of the company) hasn’t been in a good mood lately so I can’t ask him for raises yet.”
So two days ago, I found out a newer employee who was making $11 an hour, and has HALF of the responsibilities I have, received a $2.50/hr raise to $13.50/hr — while myself and the other Shift Leaders/Key Holders/Closers/Openers have received NO compensation for the extra work we’re doing.
How do I organize and fight against this? I regularly discuss wages with coworkers & encourage them to stand their ground with me, but they’re often too fearful of organizing.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.
