I booked a immovable and essential “holiday” (expedition for a program that I have been making my way through for over 5 years) just under a month in advance and it has been denied because too many other people requested those dates off. I have formerly applied 2 months early for a different holiday and was told I had made the request too early so I decided to wait this time around.
I was only supposed to be at this job as a seasonal employee terminating in march of this year however I stayed on because I had no where else to go. I'm a flexible worker typically with a minimum of 7.5 hours a week. Though I have had weeks where I have done far more depending on others schedules. I've been told that we would not be able to open the shop if I took time off then and I feel this is unfair because if I had handed in my two weeks notice they would have had to make do without me anyway, were they assuming that I wouldn't leave?
If I had decided to leave what would they have done? I can't leave my lovely co-workers who haven't done anything wrong to cover the shifts I would have taken, that's unfair on them and taking away their summer. Should I quit? They would have 4 weeks to train someone to take my place, it's not a very skilled role. I've explored other options but this seems to be the only route I could take. I don't want to wait another year to take this expedition it has already been massively delayed by covid. Please let me know if any clarification is needed.
