Is this retaliation? Is there any legal recourse?

I’m writing this for a friend who doesn’t have Reddit. We work at a bar and have recently had a change in management. Our new managers have very little experience managing or running a bar. My coworker let my female manager know that our male manager had made creepy comments to her and that she didn’t feel comfortable working with him. Our female manager failed to bring this up to her boss or attempt to correct the situation by making sure our male manager wasn’t present for my coworkers shift. Well because nothing was being done my coworker emailed my managers -> mangers -> manager. I hope this makes sense lol.

They then discussed things with our managers manager who discussed the issue with our male manager. My coworker was promised she wouldn’t have to work with him anymore as this was being treated as sexual harassment. Well our male manager decided to quit on the spot. He was sexist and awful and refused to provide sanitary items for the staff of all women. I’m not sad he’s gone but our female managers response has me questioning if this is retaliation.

On a call with my female manager my coworker said “I don’t want to deal with this drama” to which my female manager responded “you did this to yourself, the balls in your court”. Since this conversation my coworkers hours have been cut to a single 2 hour shift and she’s been demoted to strictly serving (she was promised & had been working bartending shifts.) When we received a group text about our male manager stepping down our female manager expressed how sad she was about his departure. This didn’t sit right with either me or my coworker.

There has been a litany of other issues including racism and threats to call the police. I can get more specific if there’s questions. Does this count as retaliation? Does my coworker have any legal recourse? Thank you in advance!
