Today, a colleague broke me and I’m handing in my notice

7 years, 4 of them spent as a team lead. Gained the respect of all my colleagues and they hold me in such high regard. But I’m surrounded by supervisors, other team leads and managers that couldn’t care if you are terminally Ill, struggling at home or needing the space to work from home. I’m handing in my notice soon after an hour long review. It was with a coworker who spent 4 long years working his arse off for this company. It was supposed to be a review about absences, lateness and his general well-being. But they got to him first, he’s quitting Monday. He explained that his working from home request was ripped up 4 weeks early because another manager overturned the decision.

He wanted to spend the time in company of his father In law who recently lost his wife, who he had been married to for 55 years! He’s heart broken and my coworker found him trying to end his own life, work knew but still guilted him into returning to work.

He’s been my best colleague, always early, always an overachiever! A yes man that always smiled and did the work without a peep. He was suffering and we couldn’t spare him the space to recover, he’s handing in his notice on Monday.

I’ve overlooked that I’ve cried at my desk 3 times this week, but now this has made me realise.

You are NOTHING, it won’t change. Move on, go for the money and work the minimum to go under the radar.

I’ve failed someone who called me ‘dear brother’ at the start of every message, I hate this, don’t become me.

We are a tech firm, working from home is easy. He was the highest achiever on my team during COVID, why couldn’t they give him that space!
