Antiwork

My manager told me I was working too slow and that I wasn’t fit for the job coming back from a work-related injury. He threatened to fire me. I quit and now work for a small accounting firm. I couldn’t be happier.

This was about a few months back. I worked for a big grocery store chain and was looking for a job to make some money for myself. (I was 19 at the time) I worked in a produce department and was mainly responsible for doing the heavy labour of moving boxes of fruits and vegetables that were moderately heavy, as well as ensuring that the quality of product to be displayed at the front of the store was as fresh as possible. After about 6 months, a freak accident happened as I was doing my job; a partially torn rotator cuff on my right shoulder. This injury was worse than I thought as it became chronic and was stubborn on recovery. I at least had some worker's comp and my manager at the time understood my situation. I worked in a produce department and was mainly responsible for doing the heavy labour of moving boxes of fruits and vegetables that were moderately heavy, as well as ensuring that the quality of product to be displayed at the front of the store was as fresh as possible.

After about 6 months, a freak accident happened as I was doing my job; a partially torn rotator cuff on my right shoulder. This injury was worse than I thought as it became chronic and was stubborn on recovery. I at least had some worker's comp and my manager at the time understood my situation. Fast forward to about after 3-4 months from the injury, I'm back to doing the usual work, and to no one's surprise (from the store manager and my co-workers), they noticed I was a little sluggish and slower than usual and just told me to take it easy and prioritize safety. However, my produce manager wasn't having any of what the store managers were saying. When I came back, I noticed his behavior towards me changed. He was cussing and bitching about how slow my work pace was, he started to dictate when I can go on my breaks, and deliberately gave me heavy boxes to lift compared to the other workers. On the second week back at work after my injury, he wanted to have a chat and basically told me that he didn't give a shit if I came back from an injury and simply told me that I was inefficient and not fit for the job since I came back. I was shocked, it was like a slap in the face for me. To end the conversation, he gave me an ultimatum that I was either going to be fired or that I can't make up any BS excuse and force myself to work as fast as possible (It was difficult to increase the intensity since I was still experiencing a little bit of pain). After that, I just went up to the store manager and said that I was going to quit.

There's just no use in risking your safety and risking injury for a job that doesn't pay much. Management can suck sometimes. Afterwards, I found a job at a small accounting firm that pays significantly more and at least has considerate management.

Screw you, Vlad. It's nice knowing that shortly after I quit, he was fired for not following company policy and safety guidelines.
