So I started a new job recently in retail. And the rule is we have to stay on after the end of our shift time for however long it takes to close the store – vacuuming, cleaning, counting the till, among other odd jobs. In my last several shifts I worked 20 minutes overtime my first day, 30 minutes overtime yesterday and 12 minutes overtime today. Only one of my shifts did I actually leave on time.
Yesterday my manager “helped” me with my timesheets (not that I wouldn’t know how to fill it out myself). She entered the times I worked as they were rostered – leaving out all the overtime I did. So I went home yesterday and added the 20 and 30 minutes for the days she left them out for (noting she tried to fill in my hours for yesterday before the shift had ended).
So today she wanted to show me how to submit a time sheet. She checks how I filled it in and then said “nope” as she saw I added 20 minutes. I had to explain how I worked overtime and she said “I have a budget I have to meet! We usually don’t leave on time by a few minutes but when stay an extra 10-15 minutes we don’t count it as overtime. She said this was a good thing because she won’t penalise us if we’re a few minutes late arriving in the morning.
Begrudgingly she submitted my own time sheet with the extra overtime. However she submitted it before I had finished today, and those 12 minutes I worked after I was meant to go home were not counted.
I find it ironic that we can see $20,000 watches yet they can’t pay me an extra $10 for staying back
