Got this gem of an email today from a company I inquired with for a plumbing apprenticeship.

Starting pay is as follows: Day 1 = $15/$16 depending on experience 3 months = Review to discuss work ethic and how things are going on both sides of the table. 1 year = Annual reviews (typically these are done in Dec/Jan) We go through (State) for all of our apprenticeships.  Currently county is $35.41 average pay for a Journeyman Skilled Plumber.  Once indentured into the apprenticeship program you can expect the following. Apprenticeship rates: 1st year = 45% – $15.93 2nd year = 55% – $19.47 3rd year = 65% – $23.01 4th year = 70% – $24.79 5th year = 75% – $26.56 Once you receive your journeyman licence, pay would be determined based on what and how you are doing.  Start period would be 1-3 weeks. When I responded that I was getting an offer for roughly $20 an hour from another company, I got this gem of an answer.…

Starting pay is as follows:

Day 1 = $15/$16 depending on experience

3 months = Review to discuss work ethic and how things are going on both sides of the table.

1 year = Annual reviews (typically these are done in Dec/Jan)

We go through (State) for all of our apprenticeships.  Currently county is $35.41 average pay for a Journeyman Skilled Plumber.  Once indentured into the apprenticeship program you can expect the following.

Apprenticeship rates:

1st year = 45% – $15.93

2nd year = 55% – $19.47

3rd year = 65% – $23.01

4th year = 70% – $24.79

5th year = 75% – $26.56

Once you receive your journeyman licence, pay would be determined based on what and how you are doing.

Start period would be 1-3 weeks.

When I responded that I was getting an offer for roughly $20 an hour from another company, I got this gem of an answer.

Thank you for your honesty.  I cannot start you out at that wage nor can promise you that wage within 1-2 years of employment with us.  All companies run a little differently and utilize their apprentices a little differently as well.  Whomever is offering you that, you may want to clarify with them that during your apprenticeship you will be given job duties with the journeyman plumbers to experience the plumbing atmosphere along with a written document that you will not be laid off when you become a 5th year apprentice.  We are a family owned and operated company and care about our employees and not just the numbers associated with employees.

Good luck in your ventures and hope everything works out for you.

The bold is the part that REALLY stuck out to me too. That screams, let me abuse you for your time and pay you way under valued.
