One of my former colleagues manages a roofing company. He told me that they hired a brand new estimator and when he went out on one of his first jobs, he accidentally measured wrong and undersold the job to the client by about $11k. He’s a new employee so I guess mistakes happen. I’m not sure what their training process is or why he went out alone if he didn’t know what he was doing in the first place.
Anyway, my manager friend was telling me that they’re making him bite the bullet and repay the company through his commission on future jobs. Is this normal..? Apparently the employee was very apologetic and felt badly. Idk it just seems like they should have had someone else out with him until they were sure he knew how to do estimates correctly.
What do ya’ll think of this? Also, this company is booming with business this year so it’s not like they’re hurting by any means.. they’re a relatively small business but are still selling millions of dollars worth of projects each year.
At least the client got a good deal I guess..
