I had raved about a new postion I obtained. One where I felt valued. Less stressed. I got my preferred shift and I'm making more money than I ever had. I remember saying “this has got to be a fever dream, I'm so happy!”
Well….I slammed right into disappointment. All my coworkers and I got along, minus one…well maybe two because I'm sure my boss hates me now.
It was just an ordinary day and I was preparing my tools for the day ahead, when a co-worker dropped the N-word. Hard R. It was in reference to another employee from a different department. This racist a hole is a big dude. 6'4 biker looking guy. And he's whiter than 2% milk. He said this infront of me (white female) and two other coworkers and my boss. I heard everyone chuckle and I thought maybe I misheard. There's no way this guy was bold enough to say this aloud! and at work! Then he said it again! AGAIN! And still everyone laughed. I began to realize everyone on my shift is a white dude over 40. It never really occurred to me before. But I became glaringly aware of my surroundings in that moment.
So after everyone gets up to go clock in, I pull my boss aside. I said “hey are you really gonna let insert racsit dude get away with that? That's totally uncalled for and extremely racist.” And no shit…I shit you absolutely not…my boss replies “oh.? Please tell me you're not one of those BLM characters?” The most racist and boomer response I could ever fathom. This company boasts that its an equal opportunity employer!!
I took it to HR. HR was flabbergasted and appalled. And that's when the hiring manager admitted to me that they had to force my boss to hire a woman. Because he had been accused of sexism, and the job requires females on certain shifts (we provide mechanical and plumbing services to restroom facilities) so that the bathrooms can stay open while being maintained. I was insulted. I asked if I had only been hired for this reason, and she admitted yes…but that it was a bonus that I was also qualified.
So my boss gets reprimanded and boy oh boy was that fun. Because he knew exactly who the complaint came from!! And yesterday I recieved an ass chewing over made up performance issues. I think he's trying to find a reason to fire me.
I don't know what to do. I have a mortgage, a wife. (Yes I'm gay and that adds to my problem ) I have no back up job, and currently not much in savings. I dont know where to turn…or if I should contact HR again. They wrote him up…but would they fire him? The only reason the department survives is because of him and I think that's why he got away with the sexism issue. Another coworker confinded in me that his wife (who is a black woman) applied for my position as she has 10 years of experience, but was denied because she “wasn't quite what they were looking for”
Where should I go? What should I do?
