Question Before Tipping

I’m curious what the consensus is on this: About a month ago, I went out to get dinner. As we were paying on an iPad, the server says “Don’t tip. It doesn’t go to the servers”. I didn’t tip, told him that I’m pretty sure that’s illegal, thanked him, and left. That got me thinking… how many places do this? So now, when I dine-in (being specific on purpose), I want to ask the server: “Do tips go to you and your team?” If they answer no, no tip (or cash). In the US if it matters. I’m posting this here since I’ve seen the mention of tipping frequently on this sub. Thoughts? TYIA.
