Put in my two weeks today. Everyone including the boss knew it was coming as I’d been very clear that I was only staying while my visa was in processing. Everyone else took the time to ask where I was going and even learn the difference between Taiwan and Thailand. That’s a lot from rural Americans who are happy where they are and don’t care what goes on outside their town.
The boss has always been convinced I’m going to Japan and he’s known for flying off the handle so nobody corrected him.
That all changed today when I turned in my resignation letter clearly stating that I was offered a job in Taiwan.
He spent quite awhile trying to convince me it was too dangerous to go for the following reasons: China is going to invade Taiwan to steal their women to fix their population problem, Joe Biden is making America weak, China is communist.
He never asked me why I would choose to move there, but as part of this ongoing campaign to convince me not to quit, I’m sure he’ll ask me.
This is what I’ll tell him:
Entry level salary for my industry in Taiwan is about what I currently make overtime.
Four hours per day of work will pay for rent in city center, restaurant food three meals per day, phone bill, university tuition (if I decide to go back to school), vacations, hobbies (mine are cheap) and I’ll still have about 15 grand to invest in my retirement.
Nationalized healthcare is more affordable and higher quality than the US.
The government believes in climate change and is actively taking steps to mitigate its effects.
I’ve been his star employee for the past few months he clearly thinks I’m smart and has even asked for my input on a few things, something he never does even with people that have worked at the company for 30+ years.
When he finds out that I am leaving the country to live in a geopolitical flashpoint because of how American companies treat their employees, it’s going to break his smooth little maga brain.
Updates to come.
Tl;dr: my MAGA loving boss is about to get his world rocked when I explain I’m quitting leaving the country in search of a better life outside the US
