Quit my job tonight after being told I’m replaceable

Hey guys hope this is the right subreddit. I work in a pizza shop that has nice wood fire pizza… the owner works with us and does a lot of the regular tasks around the kitchen. The manager is kinda of a lazy person who doesn't work most shifts and is not inspired.. kinda of runnin the business into the ground with her work ethic. Work was fun at first but slowly started to lower my quality of life and happiness as the boss would often complain about his payroll expenses to us while paying the absolute minimum wage with no benefits.. I only made $1 more than that but most of the team was being shortchanged on their talent. I am a prepper and do a honest good job. Clean veggie cuts, cooking properly caring about the high level of cleanliness… the ideal food service mindset. I was told…

I was told that my prep one week wasn't enough for the night crew but the truth is that we have been understaffed on the schedule and prep doesn't get finished by the openers for the week leading to the lack of ability to prep when busy on the early weekend.

I asked for 20-25 hours after a while because I started my own food business on the side (meal prepping)…. slowly that turned into 15 then this week 12 hours.. I couldn't survive on that especially as payday is the 7th and 21st so my rent often ended up being late plus the fee $50.

A few weeks ago me and my coworker Mel were 10 minutes from closing when he sent a pizza through. it would take 15 minutes to reheat wood fired oven and we would have to cook it then clean up another 15 minutes increasing his “payroll expenses” as he always reminded us each shift. Well the next day after that he grilled my coworker and I said that if he sends one through then we need to make it no matter time… no respect for our time or consideration of the things hes always complaining about.

He let me and Mel know that there are 2 applications on the desk and we can leave now because we're replaceable. I said nothing and nodded my head and knew it was time to look for a new job. He began telling us about his father who worked 15 hours days and had no breaks… all I could think was so what your ancestor was overworked and had a rough life.. doesn't mean you need to treat employees like fodder for your anger issues.

Well tonight after securing a new job earlier in the day I worked my scheduled shift and handed in my keys. He gave the shocked pikachu face. He told me he was upset that I didn't give 2 week notice and that it was okay. I let him know then that when he told me I was replaceable I started looking for a new job. As a father of a 2 year old knowing that I was so replaceable made me feel insecure about work. I normally would give notice and this is the first time I quit a job on the spot.

He was not happy but he shook my hand and gave me a hug. I kept it real and that was not easy but it is what was right to me.
