“Nobody wants to work anymore” vs. What she actually meant to say

(Idk if this type of post is allowed so let me know if not) I was in a local restaurant yesterday. They were extremely busy due to closing for a month next week, and it took about 2 and a half hours for our takeout order to be ready. No problem, it’s busy as hell. But when i get there, i notice that only one person is working, ALONE. She has a full restaurant, and hella take out orders, and she’s ALONE (except for her 12 yo daughter who was “helping”, and the small kitchen staff). While i’m waiting in line, she says the classic: “Nobody wants to work anymore.” So i rolled my eyes. But then she proceeded to say: “Nobody wants to work my job.” And there it was. What she actually meant to say. She wasn’t working alone because nobody wants to work anymore, she was working…

I was in a local restaurant yesterday.

While i’m waiting in line, she says the classic:

“Nobody wants to work anymore.”

So i rolled my eyes. But then she proceeded to say:

“Nobody wants to work my job.”

And there it was. What she actually meant to say. She wasn’t working alone because nobody wants to work anymore, she was working alone because no one wants to work minimum wage at a shitty, extremely busy restaurant while getting berated by karens who give 2$ of tip on 100$ orders. (There was a lady who complained that her order had taken long, like can’t you see she’s slammed and ALONE?!)

I gave her a 20$ tip. I’ve worked in the industry and used to have a family owned restaurant, so i knew how she was feeling. But the whole rethoric around “nobody wants to work” really falls flat when you realize nobody wants to work under shitty conditions. That’s all it really means.
