How to professionally ask to take a step back

I've been working for this company for less than a year and a couple of months ago I agreed to take on extra responsibilities with no extra pay and they would help me with my Canadian residency. It turns out they can't in fact help me and I've decided I'm going to apply for a study visa and go back to school. So I would like to go back to the role I was originally hired for. Basically screw all the extra time and stress they're putting on me. I casually brought it up with a manager who told me they cannot change my position and told me to email her. Any advice or tips on how to professionally ask? They don't know I plan on leaving for school yet but if they give me a hard time about this I have no problem just quitting.
