I didn’t give 90 day notice so I have to work for free

My job says you must give a 90 day notice. I was away for unpaid fmla leave of 12 weeks and during that time got an offer that was irresistible. When I told my boss I wasn’t coming back he flipped out so hard. Now we had to come up with a “mutual agreement” where I have to work for free, two 24 hour shifts, or else that will be considered “not in good standing.” Meaning they will eff up all my references in future. It just sucks that they couldn’t pay me anything for 12 weeks but expect me to have loyalty and when I try to leave, they threaten me with bad references meaning it could jeopardize my future jobs.
