Worried about burn out are you?

I work in industrial maintenance, and management at my job is constantly preaching burnout awareness and talking amongst themselves about it. Yet, every single day my boss puts me in an uncomfortable position. “You wanna stay late/work tomorrow,” he says. I almost forgot to mention that we are severely understaffed. We have 27 people on maintenance currently, and we are down 15-17 people. My shift is slotted for 11 mechanics and there are 6 of us. I get off at 12:30pm and my relief doesn't get in until 3.

When he demanded I stay late yesterday, I told him no, and he stormed off. I caught up with him and confronted him about our staffing issue. I told him that I was hired on with the phrase overtime as necessary, but if it's “necessary” everyday there is a larger issue that needs to be addressed.

That issue being lack of staff. He tries to flip it saying I make everyone else suffer when I don't stay late. I cut him short saying it's you and the rest of management's fault you can't get people here and keep them here. Maybe y'all need to start having the real conversation and ask yourself why no one wants to work here (while smuggly gesturing at the current situation).

His response “go on home I don't need your help anymore.” Don't threaten me with a good time.

Edit: Oh God, I forgot he gave me the team speech. ” Were a tea…” “I see that. Have you ever see a pitcher get subbed out? How about a HB, CB, DB get subbed out? You don't see defense working overtime on offense do you? And you know the games these teams play have a defined ending too right?” That topic was dropped immediately.
