I currently work for a company where over half of the employees work remote from all over the country. Those of us in the area of our main office are currently allowed to work a hybrid schedule. My coworker in my department (same job duties) decided to move out of state and was granted full time remote work a few months ago. In addition, the others in my department are all fully remote as well. I decided to ask if I would be able to transition into a full time remote schedule and was told that if we live within a commutable distance, we are expected to come into the office, and that the only reason my coworker was granted that opportunity was because he “eliminated his ability to come into the office” by moving away. To me, this tells me that it is somehow in my best interest to move far away in order to earn the same privileges. I have explained that it seems wrong to deny certain employees this financial benefit, as well as the perk of no commute and more personal time, just because they live in a certain geographical location. But they are standing firm. Has anyone else dealt with this, and are they allowed to discriminate based on where I live?
