Hypothetical situation: Can an employer fire me for scheduling surgery immediately after getting hired?

Sorry if this isn't the right place, but I figure y'all could probably at least point me there. Let's say I have a job interview scheduled for tomorrow. Let's say I also just found out like 5 minutes ago that I'm now scheduled for surgery September 2nd. If I get hired, and immediately put in for the time off, can they fire me for that? I'm think that if I let them know it's reproductive health surgery, and they fire me, that would be sexual discrimination, right? CA is an at will state, so obviously they could fire me for whatever they want, buuuuuuut should I be concerned about this?
