I never understood it.

In my working career I would walk through the cube farm and see people with photos of family and pets, action figures, etc. This was also common in the private offices. I NEVER brought personal items to have on my desk or wall. Never. This way, when my time was over at that place, I just left with no boxes under my arm full of crap that I should have left at home in the first place. I knew in 1987 when I began my working career that as soon as these companies had a slip in stock price or made a blunder in the C-Suite, they would cut their force and I was just a name on a ledger that may or may not be above the cut off line for lay offs.
