Feb 2022 there was a hailstorm in the area where I live. It was bad enough that I needed a new roof and the company that came out also noted I needed the fence redone as hail had damaged that too. Claims filed with insurance, deductible to meet and months later they come out to do the roof.
Here's the thing, roofing companies depend on cheap and fast labor. While the company makes itself out to be a Christian owned concern, I never saw any sign that they cared for the health and well being of the people doing the actual work. None of the workers had any safety protection other than their own guts and balls and willingness to risk life and limb to do the roof work. Having some experience with OSHA regulations, every worker was violating OSHA's fall protection standards for working on a steep pitched roof. Thankfully, no one fell while working on my home but there are several areas of my roof that could result in a fall greater than 35 ft and directly on to concrete.
I took some time to drive around the neighborhood where many others were getting new roofs, not a single one of them were using a fall arrest system or abiding by OSHA's regulations for working at height. Just industry standard here in Texas I suppose.
Months later they got around to doing the fence. This was another exploitation disaster. The worker spraying the fence didn't have any protection against the mist of the petroleum based stains being used. I can't even imagine what his lungs look like after being in this mist for 3 straight hours as they prefer to stain fences on low wind days to avoid drift on vehicles in the neighborhood.
I feel guilty being part of this system. I know that I should have done more to ensure the worker's safety but at the same time, I know they would have walked and I'd be faced with compromising at some point with another roofing company. When the whole system is corrupt with exploiting workers what can one do?
