I recently started looking for new employment after closing down my personal business of 12 years a few months ago. (Covid and greed ruined construction). One of the reasons I shut down was I could not afford to pay my workers better and being skilled in construction you should make good money.
So I have applied to several places I've decided that local fast food places retail stores are paying starting anywhere between 13 and $17 an hour in my area. So if I'm the continuing the construction field in any way I want high 20s if not more. After all I can go flip burgers for 14 bucks, and not have to use tools or drive my truck or deal with mud and rain and heights and weather and just you know things that are unpleasant.
But I applied for an airplane painting position. The ad online said between 14 and $28 an hour depending on skill, part of the application questionnaire was are you comfortable with 40 ft heights. Spending 20 plus years in construction it's not unusual to be that high in the air for me. They contacted me a week ago about the position through emails and called a few times but we never connected. And then it stopped for about 7 days and the ad site employment whatever had the job removed. So my viewers they found somebody else to fill their position didn't care got hired somewhere else making mid-20s whatever. Yesterday I got a phone call from them wanting to know if I still interested in the position? I said sure. And she talks for a few moments about her company and how long they're around and where they work at and yada and then says that the starting pay would be $14 an hour and I was for unskilled. And I was like unskilled as and never touching a paintbrush before because I've painted many things and prepped like I know what's required. And then she was like well this position pays $14 an hour reassuring but that's where it's at and I was like astounded.
You can go flip burgers or work in the local grocery store putting boxes on a shelf nowadays for over $14 an hour. Why do these companies that require things like working in the heights breathing toxic chemicals smelling chemicals hazardous things still think that that's an acceptable wage. These this company filled this position once and within 7 days was trying to fill it again because the person said f*** this.
As I say some companies still don't get it
