My boyfriend lives on a shared property whose owner refuses to maintain it. Yesterday, the trash dump the owner has left behind his rented home exploded and caused a major fire. My boyfriend has puncture wounds from falling on debris while fighting the fire before the FDP could arrive. He went to get a tetanus shot the day after, and was told it was $80 with insurance, $500 without. We are in WA so we can get insurance without a job; otherwise, the sole caregiver of two sons would have to risk dying of lockjaw because he can't afford preventative care. This isn't right.
The owner will not be held responsible for any injuries, we learned.
ETA: we can afford $80, he got the shot. My mind is still blown at the potential cost.
