I have a funny situation, so I am a receptionist and get paid 17$ in Cali so 2$ above minimum wage. My duties are basically clean office file paperwork and laundry. I am also the only receptionist so when I’m not there nothing gets done.
My boss (also the owner)is blind and single so she also has me driving her places almost everyday, grocery shopping (I go in with her) appointments and sometimes random places like the beach (which I also join her).
I don’t mind because it’s a nice escape from cleaning and answering phones and me and my boss are good friends because of this but I’ve come to realize that I might not actually be getting paid for this.
I mostly think this because sometimes after I drive her places she will say, “I forgot to give you gas money for the last times you have driven me” and will give me a $20.
But at the same time she has me track down the amount of miles at the end of the day on a paper. But I don’t see any increase on my paycheck.
For the past year I’ve let it go because I genuinely enjoy my job and driving her around but only recently she told me that I lost out on a pay increase because I’ve been slacking on cleaning, which is ridiculous because I only work 8 hours a day and 5 of that I’m driving her around.
I’m not sure what to do, I’m debating on quitting.
