When did having a job start to mean “this is your identity?”

I just got into IT because it was the only thing that didn't require a degree to get in. Moved past help desk and into a better, hands on position, but holy hell the “advice” i get from my employers and coworkers is “Build your own server. Study a lot on your own time, try see if you can-” How about you fucking teach me during working hours? This job is just a job, not a passion of mine, I only do this for money and would not give a shit about tech if i won the lottery. Just pissed i am expected to think this career is my entire life
