New job and only ~8 hours of training…

I started my new job working as a school secretary on Monday. I had about 45 minutes worth of “training” once a week for 6 weeks over the summer back in June. Monday I came into the office for my first day and it was just me and the principal there. I was so lost. I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing. She gave me some tasks that I had to figure out, but any questions I had, she couldn’t answer because she doesn’t know how to do my job either. But half the time I call to ask questions, I need to leave a voicemail and try someone else because no one answers the phone! I take calls from parents to answer questions but I usually end up putting them on hold and asking someone else. I’m so lost, confused, depressed, angry… and I can’t fall asleep.

My mother-in-law works as a secretary within the school district too and she’s basically the one who got me the job. Everyone knows that she’s my MIL already. I don’t want to make her look bad by quitting or demanding someone come train me. Even if I did demand someone to train me, they don’t have anyone. They are desperate for people and short staffed everywhere. I hate it here.
