New manager thinks he’s my boss

I have been managing a thrift store since March. It's a volunteer run not for profit business that gives back to our community directly. We recently hired one of the volunteers as an assistant manager to cover some shifts because I've had to cut hours due to my mental health. Since he's been hired, he has been rubbing me the wrong way a lot, but I've kept it to myself to keep the peace.

Yesterday though… This guy questions everything I do and it started as soon as he came in for his shift.

I work 9 hours a day. We were discussing some things that were bothering him about how I do my job, and he looks at me and says with attitude “this isn't a 9-5 job.. You leave when the work is done.”

That really ticked me off and when adrenaline starts pumping, my body goes into panic attack mode.

So I spent 30 minutes deep breathing and doing grounding exercises so I didn't lose my shit on him.

Then, he insisted we talk about it right now while I was encouraging him to wait until our meeting with our boss on Tuesday morning. He refused, so I told him he had absolutely no right to speak to me this way.

The conversation goes no where, so I stopped it and said “this is why we are going to wait until Tuesday and hash it out with our boss present.” to which he replies “no, I'm going to talk about you with other people, because there are a lot of people that feel like you're not doing a good job.”

As soon as he said this, I texted our boss and told him it would be a good idea for this shithead to leave for the rest of the shift, and told him what he said.

Boss apologized to me and told me to have a good weekend, and that all will be well.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't need this job, I do it for the community impact. I am ready to walk away if this asshole keeps this up, and I'm ready to tell my boss this in our meeting Tuesday. If I leave, they are screwed.

I'm really bothered by this situation. The audacity of this guy has me flabbergasted, especially since I've treated him as an equal since day one.
