This happened 5 years ago. I worked for a food plant that was shutting down and moving manufacturing. I had already stayed past my original date agreed to for retention and severance. I was asked to stay longer to help with the full shutdown in return for an additional package. This was going to take 6 more months. I agreed, but warned them that I was interviewing for a few jobs.
After 3 months I got an offer for a job that I liked. I put my 2 weeks notice on a Tuesday because the plant was closed on Monday for a holiday. I went to the managers office in the morning and spoke to her 1on1 and thanked her for everything. I told her about my new job and how much I learned from her and the role I was given at the plant. I was expecting her to be disappointed, but understanding, considering the plant would be completely closed in 3 months. She told me that she hopes I enjoy the new job, but she feels like it was disrespectful that I wasn’t giving them a full two week notice. I was baffled. I told her that I couldn’t give the notice the previous day because we were closed. So the start of week 1 of my notice is a Tuesday.
She did not let up. The rest of my time there was unpleasant. She would randomly make comments in passing about how I didn’t give a full two weeks notice. I was hearing that they were trying to see if I owed money from using PTO time that I used but did not accrue yet, and that they wanted me to pay back my packages because I signed something saying I would stay longer. I finished my time because I told them that I would, but on my last day I told the manager that I felt like she was unfair, and that I could have just left instead of helping out for two more full weeks. I lost a lot of respect for her. Usually you provide notice as to not burn a bridge, but this bridge was not going to exist soon, So I felt like I went above and beyond.
