last minute change in mileage pay

initially mileage wasn’t part of the deal. then it became .62 when traveling out of town. been doing that for a month or two. this weekend boss says he can only pay mileage one way OR hourly drive time but still only one way. i would not have taken these days with 100 mile drives if i had known that all mileage wouldn’t be covered. i know mileage isn’t required by law but it feels like a bait and switch. the only reasonable thing i can think of is to offer to use his home office as a base location as it’s about 10 miles closer to the jobs than my residence. we work at different sites, sometimes multiple sites per day. part rant, part seeking advice tldr; boss no longer wants to pay round trip mileage, says he can only pay one way
