Can you be fired for going on short term disability?

My husband was in an accident and broke his ankle, he’s able to get short term disability but they denied his first claim before we even knew he needed surgery. He won’t be fully recovered for six months but, in ten weeks he’ll be cleared for light duty. His coworkers are saying that the company won’t give him light duty because they’re field service techs. His coworkers are also saying they will eventually ask him to resign because they don’t want to hold his job that long. He’s been with the company for 7-8 months and as far as I know, he has no protection. If he refuses to resign can/will they fire him? And if they fire him what can we do then?
