Today is my last day at my first office job! It was terrible!
I have been working at a small office for the last 6 months – in the last 2 months, ten (10)! people have quit. In my time there, I have been given almost no direction on what to work on (despite repeatedly asking), and have spent countless hours just, like…googling stuff. Maybe that's a fine way for some people to spend their time at work (I have certainly been acting my wage), but I have spent periods of time at this job feeling so bored I was literally suicidal.
Everyone in the office unanimously complains about the boss, who is male, while the entire office staff is female. At my going away lunch yesterday, he was talking about me leaving and said “Well, she isn't disgruntled, so that's good.” BIG assumption. After lunch, I was talking to a coworker about how much we dislike him, and she strongly encouraged me to send him a message about just how disgruntled I am – she said everyone quits without saying anything to him, because they want to remain in good standing (our office holds a pretty strong place of respect in the community, somehow). This coworker also told me that he told the front desk girl “I don't fire people, I just bully them until they quit.” Now that is saying the quiet part out loud!!
I don't believe it's possible to change peoples' minds or personalities, but I also think it's important to speak truth to power. I don't have any attachment to getting a good reference from this person, and I am often the one to speak up, so I'm thinking of sending him an email (after he approves my time slip).
Obviously there's much more context than I can provide here, but I would love to hear your ideas for ways to tell a shitty narcissistic boss the reason they are hemorrhaging talent from their employ!
