I’m almost 40 years old and I’m about to quit a job for the 1st time ever. Any advice or things I should expect/know?

I am about to be 38 years old. I've been laid off so many times from other jobs due to budget cuts or other dumb things. I've also politely and maturely put in my 2 weeks notice to places before as well. But THIS job… This job can go fuck itself. Everyday I have to wake up at 4 am to be at work at 5. Mandatory one hour of overtime every day, fun 1st lie of many when I was told work began at 6. There's literally zero fucks about anything safety related. Duct tape, cardboard and plexiglass (if you're lucky) are usually what hold the machines together and “protect” you from metallic objects or debris. There's exposed wiring on things EVERYWHERE, tripping hazards nonstop, potholes somehow in the walking paths. I hurt myself last week and was temporarily blinded for 5 hours before they let me go see…

I hurt myself last week and was temporarily blinded for 5 hours before they let me go see a doctor. That was kind of the last straw.

One of my two coworkers, somehow thinks he's my supervisor and treats me like I'm an idiot. I've more experience than him and have ran TWO shops as management and all he's done is drive a forklift and weld tiny pieces of metal to hubs. Am I bragging? No absolutely not, I just don't appreciate being talked down to and treated like I'm an idiot when I'm not. I'm overqualified for this position and took it just to get some form of income in. My station, isn't rocket scientist, it's the boringest job at work and they put me here to “get experience from the old guys.” It's not experience, it's them contradicting each other all day every day and then getting mad at me for listening to the other or not doing things their way. My best example is getting yelled at, “You're using the hammer WRONG!” It's a ball pen hammer, he's yelling at me to use the round side to FLATTEN a piece of metal.

I'm so tired of hearing from everybody, “that's not how we do things around here,” if I bring up something I'm concerned with or heaven forbid take my time doing something safely.

I'm off work now. I've gathered up my personal belongings and took them with me. I had the foresight to bring all my work related clothing to the uniform pickup and leave it there 2 weeks ago just in case I reached my limit, as that's the only thing you're required to turn in. I've no reason to return tomorrow, should I choose not to go anymore. I can simply wash my hands of it and be done and have them mail me my last check.

I've never quit a job before. Should I expect some sorta retaliation? Phone calls, texts? I was thinking of calling in the next two days and give myself 5 days off. They owe me $300 STILL (another lie when they neglected to tell me how long it would take to reimburse me) and I'm told I'll get it at the end of the month but if I legit quit before then, per the employee handbook I believe I forfeit that $. I've always put my family first, above myself but my wife is just telling me to do it. Money is tight and I'm super nervous about everything. Any advice or thoughts would be most appreciated.
