For customer facing jobs, is it just an unfortunate fact you’ll have to be a walking door mat for customers?

I've been working customer facing jobs for 8 years, 6 of those were in Food Service. I'm 2 years into a corporate/office job that pays better w/ benefits. Both jobs however require you to bend over for customers no matter how stupid or rude they can get. You can't show frustration or even ask the customer to do better. I'm fucking sick of this but my skills are in customer service, and I really do enjoy helping people find what they're looking for. I find that not being able to be blunt or honest with customers makes it harder to help them sufficiently. Am I basically stuck as a door mat no matter what I do? Is moving up to a management position a way to get more respect?
