I wanted to chime in and out of solidarity with you friends share how things are going in a rather wealthy European country.
I am a millenial with a master's degree in finance working in one of the biggest corporations in my country. We are currently going through “restructuring” again and this is how the old generation and company owners want to fuck the young generation:
Status quo:
We are a team of 10 in a finance department managing internal/external accounting for more than 1000 people.
4/10 of our team is going to be retired by the next year. Everything started last year as my colleague with whom I share all the work (will be pensioned next year, holds no degree and earns 3 times my wage – due to old contract) got sick. I jumped in after my boss asked and buried myself to do all off the work for nearly a year. After a while one of our other team members got pensioned. HR and management decided “we don't need a new employee – department should just do the extra work”. Ok – fuck you.
This led to my coworker doing 2 jobs and burying himself. So my boss recognised this (that 2 of his team do jobs for 4) and called us but not with what we expected: “hey contrarian, how are you? Do you think you can do the work of the employee that got pensioned AND the colleague that is going to be pensioned next year?”.
I straight out told him “no are you crazy?” which led to a conflict with my boss for “not being a team player” for 3 months.
How it turned out:
Company retired 4/10 teammembers that earned approx. 3x of us Millenial employees. We got now additions to team and no raises (boss told us that we young workers are so well educated that we can easily do the job with 6 and not 10 employees).
Our reaction:
We talked to each other. Everyone is now in the stage of quiet quitting. We all go home at 5 pm and not a minute later. If something escalates we don't care about shit. We all are happily awaiting the next auditing of our consolidated financial statements :). Time of cover ups are over. Let em dig out the rotting corpses in the cellars of the company.
TLDR: European company cuts heads and budget left an right. Leaves millenials fucked. Now everyone workes the bare minimum and awaits catastrophe.
