Check sent to closed account

So my wife went back to a job she had previously worked at. Her first check was supposed to come in today, but they sent it to an account they had on file when she previously worked there. The account has been closed. They say they have to wait for the bank to send it back before they can pay her. Is this true? Michigan btw.
