Work place is threatening to not pay holiday pay for anyone who calls out the Friday before or the Tuesday after Labor Day.

Some info, I work at a Warehouse in California. Company wide, Labor Day is an off day and paid holiday , however at today’s morning meeting management said in an act to combat call offs anyone who does so will not be paid for Labor Day. Can they do this? What if I’m genuinely sick or an emergency comes up? What are your thoughts on this?
