Donate hours worked to charity?

I'm in the midst of going through a multiple step interview process – one step is getting through a 3 hour roleplay “how would you handle this situation in this potion” where I'm required to work through a real issue and manage a plan to fix it. This is supposed to last 3 hours. The employer said instead of paying me for the 3 hours, they would donate the money to a non-profit of my choice. Which is super cool, but also sounds kind of illegal? Don't they have to pay me for those 3 hours, regardless of hiring me or not? I haven't gotten to this step yet, but I want to be prepared.
