The place I work at pays 1.5 on most holidays, but they count it separate from regular time. I worked an extra half day on the 4th of July thinking I would get 4 hours holiday, 36 regular, and 4 hours OT, but when I got my check stub it read 40 hours regular pay, 4 hours holiday, no OT.
Holiday pay essentially cancelled out my overtime. Sure I got 1.5 for all hours worked over 40, but I would’ve gotten that on any extra day regardless of holiday. I worked overtime on a holiday and I basically didn’t get the holiday bonus.
They screwed me out of 4 hours of extra pay, so when they asked me today if I wanted to pick up an extra shift tomorrow for holiday pay I told them no. They were salty about it so I had to explain how last time I did that it wasn’t worth it because I got the same 1.5 I would’ve gotten working any other day.
Is this a regular practice? Are businesses allowed to count holiday and overtime under the same bonus multiplier?
