Meeting with HR advice needed

I have been working night shift 6PM-6am for 5 years. 6 months ago a day shift became available , and my boss promised it to me. I was set to take the 9am-6pm shift effective as soon as a new night person was hired and trained. A new person was hired in July and my day start date was August. I have been working night shift 6PM-6am for 5 years. 6 months ago a day shift became available , and my boss promised it to me. I was set to take the 9am-6pm shift effective as soon as a new night person was hired and trained.

A new person was hired in July and my day start date was August. Unfortunately his job was pulled due to a failed background check so I stayed on nights.

Another person was hired in August, and my start date was set for September.

Now HR stepped in, overrode my boss and decided to give it to the other night shift worker. He has been here for 3 years.

I sent HR an email saying “I’ve been talking with my managers about moving to days for a while, and was under the impression that once a night shift replacement was hired and trained, I would move in to my new role. It appears this is suddenly no longer the case. Can we schedule a time to discuss this?”

Now I'm being made to feel like I am in hot water to even keep my position. Like I should have accepted HRs decision without question.
