Been doing 4 people’s jobs for 3 weeks and just got told off for not joining a ‘scavenger hunt’

What the title says. I just need to rant. My manager has been on leave for 3 weeks and we’re 2 people down in the team due to a restructure so for 3 weeks I’ve been doing 4 peoples jobs + training up a new person who doesn’t know how to do anything yet. We were invited to come into the office today for a ‘team activity day’ and weren’t given the details of the activity until this morning – turns out we were being split into groups of 7, to then run around the local area on a ‘scavenger hunt’ for no less than 90 minutes. Me and my work bff decided fuck this and just went back to our desks on another floor to quietly work instead.
A couple of hours later a senior member of the team came storming over to us and pulled me aside to ask me what was going on and was everything ok, to which I said ‘yeah we just decided to come up and work instead’. She was absolutely furious, was violently running her hands through her hair almost literally tearing it out and said ‘I don’t want to have to be like a fucking teacher in school but maybe we’ll have to set some boundaries and make the next team day mandatory because this is not ok’. I said ‘sorry I don’t think we thought it would be a big issue’. She then went in circles about how we should’ve told someone we were leaving the scavenger hunt lol, that people had put effort into organising it, that we made it seem like our smaller team didn’t want to engage with the wider team (why would I give a shit about that).
It was absolutely bizarre that a grown woman was so genuinely angry that 2 adults decided to work instead of go on a scavenger hunt, and then took the time and energy to make someone feel small and miserable about it.
