“Industry Standards” are fraudulent

It seems like “industry standards” gets thrown around by businesses/corporations to justify why certain financial choices are made (or not changed even when they're clearly not up to par), particularly with workers' pay and benefits. What good are these “standards” when the industry is set up to rob us and make us grovel for scraps?
