Never trust what a company says, ever. I don’t care how trustworthy they’ve been up until now, how selfless they seem, how caring their posture is because when push to comes to shove, they’ll fuck you over.
Take it from me. I [27M] was working nearly the past two years at a non-profit in MA. They specialize in in-home services. Now, I fell into this job from a friends recommendation and initially, it was a good gig.
Union gig, salaried, good benefits, yatta yatta. The biggest catch was that the company was based out East while I was an hour to an hour and a half away. Fortunately, they had one sole client near me—only 30 or so minutes. I was with him full time.
Time passes and things get on well until my client decides to cancel services with me. All good, things happen. I bring it up to my boss and they tell me the best they can do is 3 clients 1.5hrs away. My days would be lengthened, commute quadrupled, and everything else irregular.
I know I can’t manage that so I ask if there are any other options and they say, “well, we can let you go. Good terms, recommendations a plenty, and make sure it’s filed under termination so you collect unemployment.” They even go as far as to offer “understanding” since it’s so different from my original offer and situation.
I accept the unemployment offer (dumb since I didn’t have a union witness or it in writing) and I leave. I had no reason, or so I thought, to be upset. After all, they’d been good and reasonable up until then.
2 MONTHS pass and my UI has been denied since they’ve denied such an offer and insist I quit. So now, I don’t have UI and have two months of drainage from my savings.
I risked my life in this pandemic to make them BOATLOADS of cash and all they gave us in return was a company sweatshirt and now a double crossing to boot.
I’m at a loss for words and stressed. Take it from me, this all could have been avoided if I didn’t trust a company so naively.
If anyone has any advice, I’d welcome it. Keep up the work revolution!
