So, a little bit of background: I worked for a 3rd party cleaning company at an elementary school. I was part time and there almost a year. Found out about 2 to 3 weeks ago that they lost the contract with the school and I could potentially lose my job.
I had unceremoniously been pushed into the supervisor position so I was being paid $15/hour for 20 hours a week. The site I'd be transferred to if I stayed with the company was either A. Mon/Wed/Fri for 3 hours a night at $14/hour or B. Mon-Fri for 3 hours a night at $14/hour. It would also be doubling my commute time. I ended up declining and I quit today.
I am also a full time college student. That makes it a bit more complicated to find a part time job that is flexible and pays well enough.
Anyway, with that out of the way, onto what I actually wanted to say lol.
I've been applying for jobs and reading descriptions carefully. Since I joined this community, I've learned a lot about different red flags to look out for. I've gotten a lot more confident in myself and recognized that not only are the companies paying for my time but also my experience and knowledge. I have learned through y'all that it's okay to say no and be direct and put myself first. Thank you all so much.
I had an interview this morning that was awesome. I'm really hoping to get the job.
The second interview I had was… bad. It was then I realized just how much I've learned from you lovely lot.
The 2nd position was for a job on campus working in the food service area. The dude was 20 minutes late which seemed to say my time isn't worth the same as his (red flag one). Then he started going on about how his generation and the generation after his had good work ethic but my generation didn't and that my generation would wake up not feeling well and just call in instead of toughing it out (red flag two; seemed very ridged and my immediate thought was “ok boomer”). Then he told me the full time has a union and stuff but if I'm not union, I'd get paid 11.25 or 12.25/hour (red flag three; I've determined the lowest I could go is $13/hour). He also told me that I'd basically be working between two shops on campus (red flag four; sounds like I'd be running myself ragged). Then said I was basically hired but I declined and said I had other interviews first. He then told me if I worked 30 hours a week I'd be in the union and make 16.50/hr.
P.S. I hope this doesn't come off wrong or whatever. Ik pay and such can be a touchy subject. I just wanted to tell the story to show how y'all have opened my eyes to “business lingo”
