In the interview they asked me about my hours expectation, I told them 3-4 days, 25-30 hours max as I am studying. They said that’s perfect as it’s a casual role. They also asked me about my hourly rate at my previous job (barista and I thought this was weird), they told me since I am a trainee it’s going to be 50c-1 dollar less. That’s fine.
I get the contract, pay is 50c less, but that’s ok since I have zero experience as a dental assistant.
Had my first day yesterday. I was confused about the roster so I asked. Turns out I am only rostered on for three days this week for the WHOLE MONTH. I told them what we had originally agreed on and they said at this point this is all they can offer as there isn’t enough work with only one dentist and that hours would increase once they find another one. Manager told me she thinks I’m already doing really good and would be a great da and to have a serious think if this is the role I want. Obviously hinting this is a shitbox company.
Then, I get told HR got my age wrong and now my pay is actually 7 dollars less than what they originally told me in the contract. I’m 18, apparently the pay rates they gave me originally were for 20 and up. I tell them I am almost 19 and they say it will increase then and after 3 months of experience. Absolutely ridiculous. My pay went from AUD 26.5 to 19.5. I cannot survive on 3 days a month and not even 20 an hour. I’m sure the Americans here will be confused but even on 26-27 and full time people struggle to live here. Cost of living is crazy in Aus.
I now have to find another job in an industry I have no experience in and take up extra shifts as barista which I fucking hated. I worked in the industry for almost 5 years and I could not deal with the abuse from mainly customers but also management any longer.
If I can’t lie on my resume why can an employer lie about the job.
