Is it fair that my performance at work is constantly compared to a colleague earning more than me?

I’m not an “above and beyond” kind of worker. I do my bit and log off at 5. I work a kinda sales job with no commission structure and a colleague who does the exact same job earns more (they negotiated a higher salary during the hiring process). Either way, my colleague has higher numbers than me day to day but he is paid more. Is my employer justified to compare our output despite paying us a different salary?
