Turned down a promotion and probably got demoted

I was offered a managerial position at my job in another department cause that manage quit. He quit because he was done with the nitpicking from upper management, working 6-7 days a week, often by himself, 80+ hours a week, and it still wasnt good enough. Management knew I had /some/ experience in that department. Some. So I was sent to help him out for a day, which turned into 3 days, only for him to say “fuck this” (of which I dont blame him at all!) I was approached with it simply because I got caught in the crossfire on that particular day. I hated that department before I was volunteered for it, I'd hate it even more running it working 12-14 hours a day. My mental health cant handle it, leadership is simply not for me. I'm happy where I'm at, the work is tolerable, and I busted my ass to get where I'm at now. Someone else on my crew was approached and accepted it. Good for him, let him get the opportunity if it suits him, and I'll support him if that what he wants. But now I'm being told I'm gonna be under him. Doing the work that I did my damned best to get away from. All because I don't want the responsibility of a huge, woefully understaffed, overbudget, and heavily monitored (by both corporate and state) department.
