husband’s work issue. Was he in the wrong? (long)

I'm not sure that this is the correct sub for this, if not please let me know. My husband is a production manager at a local factory. He's well liked by staff, but his staff make life hell. He can't train one without others complaining. No one wants to weld on parts that other people welded on. No one wants to fix stuff. Lots if high-school drama. Last week an employee got in his face and cussed him out. Called him all kinds of names in front of 100+ ppl. He said he didn't yell back. He told the guy to go home and sent him with a disciplinary sheet. The guy had to fill out the sheet stating what his future was on the company, what happened, and that he wouldn't do it again. BTW this was paid for the employee so he didn't lose hours. My husband requested…

My husband requested that the guy be released. He's caused many issues and it's beyond 3 strikes. HR wouldn't discipline him at all. Instead my husband got in trouble. Now he's at risk of getting fired.

The gm of their company had a meeting with him. My husband told him how he really doesn't enjoy being a manager (a job he never asked for he literally showed up and was informed he was promoted). He is struggling and needs a mentor or someone that can help him learn and navigate personnel issues. That he really needs supervisors under him and he can't do this all on his own. He's the only one without supervisors. The manager told him he could remain a manager and learn to deal with people, he could move into a job that doesn't exist yet, or he could quit. He was sent home to think about his future with the company.

My husband took Monday off to further decide what to do. He talked with the president of their mother companies national headquarters. Not to rat anyone out, but to get advice on what he should do. He likes the idea of the other position, but it's not a thing yet and he doesn't want to commit to a job that doesn't exist. The president told him he needs to go to HR first before taking action, but that HR needs to be on his side with this stuff to an extrnt and they can't undermind him. The president thinks very highly of my husband. His GM threatened to fire him over taking Monday off.

Was he in the wrong from sending the employee home, taking an extra day off, and talking to the president of their company? At this point we really don't know wtf is going on. The president of the international company and national headquarters will be in town next week. I don't think they'll fire him, but I think his gm might
