What is the alternative to owning stocks?

Apparently many in this subreddit don't like people owning stocks in companies as its stealing the profits which should go towards the employees instead. I'm not going to bother arguing about that, because we will get nowhere, but instead the followup question is what is the alternative? For most people, if you have say £500k and are looking to retire, you try to get a 5%+ return on that and live on £25k per year. But in this scenario if you put it in a savings account, your looking at £5k per year. So once again, what is the best realistic alternative?
