I didn’t think I’d live to see the day, but last night while watching Rick and Morty an actual Reddit commercial came on. I was so stunned I had to rewind just to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me.
If management is now actively trying to market this site, then I think it’s safe to say the push to file an IPO is closing in— and if that’s the case I think I’d like to call upon all moderators of any subreddit to consider banding together and maybe think about unionizing in a way.
I’m a mod of a not so known band subreddit, and while we may have 6k~ members it’s been years or careful curation and moderation and subreddit improvements. I know mods for multiple subreddits and how much time they put in for the love of their communities, and while I never signed up for this with any kind or compensation in mind, I abhor the idea that this site that’s almost exclusively built on the backs of people may be pushing to go public so a handful of already wealthy people can become ever more the hoarders of stolen wages.
It would be as if Wikipedia decided to go on the nasdaq.
This post may get buried to oblivion, but I do hope some mods of some subreddits see this.
If anything I hope this starts a serious discussion about what we are all doing here.
